Mossquill / Field guide

Nature journaling prompts for ordinary days.

Six invitations to slow down, notice what is near, and let a small observation become a thought worth keeping.

Before you begin

You do not need a special place, a finished notebook, or a long walk. Use whatever paper is close and choose one prompt. A few attentive minutes are enough.

These are standalone prompts from Mossquill. They are free to use with any notebook or scrap of paper; no purchase or product is required.

The prompts

Start close to home.

  1. 01

    Begin with what changed

Look at a familiar view—a window, a pavement crack, a garden bed. What is different today? Name three small changes in color, shape, light, or movement.

  2. 02

    Make a sound map

Pause wherever you are and listen for one minute. List the nearest sound, the farthest sound, and the sound that keeps returning. What does the place feel like when you attend to its layers?

  3. 03

    Follow one small life

Choose a leaf, insect, bird, or patch of moss. Stay with it for a few minutes. What is it doing, and what might be shaping that choice—sun, wind, water, shelter, or another living thing?

  4. 04

    Notice the light

Find one place where light meets a natural surface. Describe the edge of the shadow, the temperature of the color, and what the light reveals that you might usually miss.

  5. 05

    Let the weather speak

Write three words for the weather as it feels on your skin, then three for how it is changing the world around you. What has the air invited you to notice today?

  6. 06

    Return before you leave

Before you move on, look again at the detail that first caught you. Has your attention changed it? Finish with one sentence beginning: “I want to remember…”
